Working as a Professional \u00a0Tourist.<\/strong>
\nOne sunny morning while I was checking some ancient\u00a0shrines in Kyoto I got a message from my friend Katerina:
\n– Do you want to work at Tokyo Museum of Advertising for a day?<\/em>
\n – Hm… Doing what?<\/em>
\n – Working. As a tourist. They will close the entire museum for the day and you’ll get 4 personal tour guides. All you need to do is listen and ask questions… and then you get paid.<\/em>
\nIt sounded like a damn good deal.

\nThat\u00a0day I took the first\u00a0train to Tokyo and was at the museum by the\u00a0set time. It\u00a0belongs to Dentsu the famous\u00a0advertising agency that almost entirely dominates the Japanese market.<\/p>\n

The museum\u00a0trains their staff by brining in english speaking\u00a0guests who act as tourists. \u00a0It was a great experience. I felt that my\u00a0teaching, design, people, and communication skills \u00a0all came together in one-of-a-kind job – a professional tourist. If you ever visit the museum in Tokyo you’ll likely hear\u00a0fragments of\u00a0the vast\u00a0feedback that I left after my visit \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Now I can say I have Japanese work experience. Otsukaresama deshita!

\nLove hotels is a type of short-stay accomodations\u00a0popular in Japan. There you can pay per night or per ‘rest’.<\/p>\n

Infamous Japanese sex shops. This photo was taken at M’s, the\u00a07-storey department store in\u00a0Akihabara. I’ve heard there are shops\u00a0where women are not allowed to… I couldn’t find one.<\/p>\n

In Kyoto, the traditional capital of Japan, for some 10,000 yen you can get the full Maiko makeover experience. They dress you up, do the make-up and let you walk around the city take pictures.\u00a0If you want to be a geisha you\u2019ll\u00a0need\u00a0to throw a couple\u00a0more\u00a0grands on top of that. For \u00a52000 – 3000\u00a0you can just rent a kimono. When tourists say they see geishas on the streets of Gion, there’s a chance they just\u00a0see a japanese bachelorette getaway.<\/p>\n

Make a wish<\/strong><\/p>\n

Omikuji are random fortunes written on strips of paper at shrines and temples in Japan. For a small coin (\u00a5100\/$1)\u00a0you can get yours. (If you are exceptionally lucky, it’ll also be in English) If the fortune is\u00a0good you keep it, if not leave it at the temple. Mine rest somewhere among the unlucky ones.<\/p>\n
